Ladywood Liberal Democrats back calls for a Brummie Bus Ticket

Our city is growing. Every year, we see more people choosing to live here, more students choosing to study here, more tourists visiting us and more businesses choosing to set up here. This brings countless benefits to Birmingham, however, as we prepare up for the 2022 commonwealth games and continue to become an even more attractive city, the need for an efficient and reasonable public transport system is becoming increasingly urgent.

Therefore, we’re backing calls for Transport West Midlands to introduce a Brummie bus ticket, alongside simplified general fares and measures to make the Swift Card system easier and more attractive for new users.

Currently, bus users in both Coventry and the Black Country can buy cheaper tickets that cover just their areas. A Brummie bus ticket would similarly cover travel within Birmingham, at a reduced rate for users and bring an end to the injustice of Birmingham users subsidising the rest of the region. This more cost-effective option for getting around the city would enable both residents and visitors to explore all that our fantastic city has to offer and reduce the number of cars on our roads.

Alongside proposals for the Brummie Bus Ticket, we are also calling on Transport West Midlands to improve the Swift Smart Card system to simplify and streamline public transport use throughout the city and wider region. Many major cities have popular smart card systems, Birmingham should not be lagging behind in this area.

As the second city of the UK, there is no excuse for a public transport system that doesn’t do Birmingham and its residents justice.

On May 3rd, vote Liberal Democrat for real change and for Councillors that will fight for a public transport system which you can be proud of.
